Turkey summer holidays guide: 201

Turkey summer holidays guide: 2014

Planning a holiday to Turkey? Read our guide to the best regions, including expert advice on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, ancient sites such as Troy and Ephesus, as well as Cappadocia, Anatolia, and around Lake Van, and recommendations on getting there. By Terry Richardson, Telegraph Travel Turkey expert.

Whether you view Turkey as a bridge or a barrier between Europe and Asia, there is no doubt that its unique geographical location, poised as it is by the Christian West and Muslim East, gives it an extra frisson when compared with competing Mediterranean destinations such as Italy and Greece. In predominantly Muslim Turkey, for example, you may well find yourself briefly stirred around dawn by the atmospheric sound of the call to prayer. But as it is also a firmly secular state, you’ll more than likely be enjoying a chilled glass of white wine or cold beer with your meal by the time the dusk prayers emanate from the minaret of the nearest mosque.
In part owing to their Islamic heritage, in part to their origins as nomadic herdsmen on the steppes of Central Asia, the Turks are an incredibly hospitable, open and friendly people. Sitting down for a glass of tea served in an elegant, tulip-shaped glass with a shopkeeper in a local bazaar is not usually just a ploy to give him more time to make his sales pitch, it’s simply part and parcel of Turkish culture. Drive through a village in search of some romantically located ancient ruins, and stop to ask directions, and you may well not get an intelligible answer (English is not widely spoken outside the resorts and large cities) but you may well find yourself plied with free teas in the local café.

The Byzantine Church of the Three Crosses has spectacular carvings and paintings.
But the thrill of holidaying in a different culture amongst some of the world’s friendliest people is not sufficient to explain why Turkey attracts some 35 million visitors a year. With over 1,700 miles of Aegean and almost 1,000 miles of Mediterranean coastline, Turkey is a major draw for visitors looking for a beach-based holiday.

In the Aegean region, the mountains of the Anatolian interior (Anatolia is a vast, tilting tableland of steppe and mountain running for almost a thousand miles to the borders with Iran) run at right angles to the sea, giving a beautifully indented coastline of bays and coves, promontories and peninsulas – at its dramatic best around the popular resort towns of Bodrum and Marmaris. The mountains plunge right into the sea in many places around the mountainous southwest corner of the country, where the Aegean merges into the Mediterranean, whilst heading east ofAntalya, a broad plain fronting the Taurus mountain chain is fringed by endless sandy beaches.
Despite vows not to go the same way as Spain, tourist development has made a huge impact – particularly around Antalya, where all-inclusive hotels and golf courses have irrevocably changed the landscape. The rockier shores to the south-west Med and south Aegean have been more resistant to change, however, with resorts such as KaÅŸ, Kalkan, GelemiÅŸ (Patara), Dalyan and Bodrum preserving much of their charm. Whilst most visitors are content to sunbathe, swim and take the odd boat tour, there are plenty of opportunities for diving, windsurfing and sea-kayaking. The gloriously rocky coastline of the southwest also lends itself to gulet(yacht) tours; at their most luxurious these vessels are floating villas of self-indulgence.

The ancient city of Perge, east of Antalya, was founded in about 1,000 BC.
.
Another major joy of exploring Turkey is its ancient sites – the Aegean and Mediterranean littoral is liberally strewn with superb Graeco-Roman ruins, from well-know places like Troy and Ephesus to little-visited wonders such asArykanda and Sagalassos. Most sites are easy enough to visit either on an organised tour or by hire car, although some are best approached by boat. Readily accessible from many coastal resorts are geological wonders such as the incredible travertine basins and hot springs at Pammukale, and from Antalya the beautiful Turkish lakeland around EÄŸirdir gives cooling respite from the coastal summer heat. The Lycian, Carian and St Paul’s marked trails have helped open up the mountains behind the coast to walkers; winter time visitors may be attracted by ski resorts at Saklikent and Davraz.
Turkey booking guide
The eerie travertine basins and hot springs at Pammukale are other-worldly.

Turkey is a huge country, and with so many repeat visitors it is not surprising that after initial forays to the coastal belt, many find themselves lured by the austere landscapes of Anatolia. The rock-cut Byzantine churches and weird volcanic rock formations of Cappadocia, now home to hundreds of "cave" boutique hotels, is the most popular inland region. Those with a taste for wilder scenery and/or less well known civilisations head to the Hittite heartlands east of Ankara, the Urartian fortresses and Armenian churches around the impossibly blue waters of Lake Van, and the "cradle of civilisation", the Euphrates and Tigris basins of the south-east. These regions are a long way - in more than distance - from the flesh-pots of the coast, but they are absolutely fascinating.
Wherever you go in Turkey, and whether you stay in a posh villa or modest guesthouse, criss-cross the land in a hired car or go on an organised coach tour, you’ll be sure of a warm welcome, and come away with an intriguing insight into a country that is neither East nor West - but wholly its own.

Tourism in Barcelona SPAIN

Not only did the 1992 Summer Olympics bring Barcelona to the centre of the world stage, but they also gave this historical city a new lease of life. As with many cities that have been given such a prestigious and monumental event, cash was injected to give visitors a good impression, and the numbers of these visitors increased dramatically. Tourism soared, and has continued to do so ever since.

However, the benefits to Barcelona went further than this. Barcelona is the capital city of Cataluña, one of the seventeen autonomous regions of Spain, and the Games brought the Catalan culture into the eyes of the rest of the world.
A survey carried out by the Games organizers had demonstrated that Spain was largely associated with sun, siestas and sangria, and also bullfighting, castañets and flamenco. The Catalan culture was virtually unheard of outside of Western Europe, and in keeping with the objectives of most other modern Olympic Games, the challenge was how to fairly and accurately project the culture and people of Spain while maintaining the essence of this part of the country.

Barcelona had applied for these Games three times previously without success, and it was particularly appropriate that the city should be awarded the 1992 Olympic Games because it was exactly 500 years after Christopher Columbus discovered America for Spain.
The city was transformed in preparation for the event, not only in terms of the new sporting complexes constructed but also with the refurbishment and renovation of the El Prat Airport and the Olympic Port in Poble Nou. Better known as Port Olímpic, this area is close to the Villa Olímpica, and famous for its fabulous restaurants and its unique clubs and bars.
However, the most important consequence of the Barcelona Olympic Games of 1992, other than the sporting spectacle itself and what it did for tourism in Spain and Barcelona in particular, was in the promotion of the Catalan culture. In 1992 Catalonia, as Cataluña is generally know outside Spain, was not generally recognized abroad as a distinctly separate area of Spain, and its culture was likewise unknown to all but those with an interest in the country.
These Olympics changed all that, and Barcelona and its Catalan culture hit the map and has been prominent in the geography, culture and cuisine of Spain ever since. Many tourists visit Barcelona only because of that. However, that was not the only aspect of Spain and Barcelona that was brought into the public eye. The architecture of Gaudi and the art of masters such as Goya became known to ordinary visitors, not just to those educated in these facets of Spanish culture. The great Pablo Picasso has a museum in Barcelona.
In terms of advertising Barcelona as a cultural centre and a ‘must’ on many people’s lists of places to visit, the Olympic Games of 1992 achieved in a few short weeks what it would otherwise have taken decades to achieve. It was not just the construction of Port Olímpic and Villa Olímpica, but also the sports facilities in Montjuic, Vall d’Hebron and Diagonal that are lasting reminders of the benefits that Barcelona won when they also won the Olympics.
Unlike most games sites, those in Barcelona have been put to use after the games, and many are still well-used sports facilities while others offer high-class luxury apartments for business and tourism. The Olympic Village (aforementioned Villa Olímpica) is one such area that now offers luxury apartments, many for short-term let.
The Olympic pool in Montjuic is still in use by the public, and not only facilities such as these, but also the significant increase in tourism since 1992, has rendered Barcelona a very popular destination for vacations and business shows and conferences. Over the 10 years from 1990 to 2000, the city experienced a 110% increase in tourism, and between 1992 and 2002, 105 more hotels have been opened.
Barcelona is now amongst the top 4 most visited cities in Europe, the others being London, Rome and Paris. The people of Barcelona are rightly proud of what have been described as the ‘model Olympics’ because of the sustained benefits to the city that that they brought. It is that word ‘sustained’ that is so important, because the ephemeral results of most other cities that hosted the Summer Olympic Games soon disappeared – but not so with Barcelona.
It is a source of pride, not only to the organizing committee, but also the people of Barcelona, that they can look at the benefits that this great city is still enjoying. In the words of the New York Times of August 1992, the athletes “could never dominate these Summer Games. The city won the Games. The people of Catalonia won the Games.”
Never were truer words written or spoken.

The Great Wheel Corporation is a company specializing in the development, building, financing and management of observation platforms and tourist observation wheels – also known as Ferris wheels.
Giant Wheels built by the company include the largest wheel in the world, the Singapore Flyer, and the company is currently building two larger wheels, the Beijing Great Wheel and the Great Berlin Wheel.
In 2006 the Dubai Municipality gave planning permission to the Great Dubai Wheel, which is expected to become one of the major attractions at Dubailand.
The 185m wheel will be taller than the London Eye and will cost over AED 250 million to construct.
Visitors to Dubailand will be able to view distances up to 50 km from the air conditioned comfort of one of 30 capsules.
The Great Dubai Wheel will be both built and managed by the Great Wheel Corporation with building expected to begin shortly, and open for business in 2009.
The engineering challenge to create the wheel has been undertaken by Hollandia, the specialist Dutch engineering company which also built the London Eye.
The master plan was prepared by a team of Great Wheel Corporation structural engineers with the support of the Dubailands team of project consultants.
Founded by Florien Bollen the current chairman, the developer company has branches in Singapore, London, Beijing, Orlando, and now Dubai – with its head office in Singapore.
[C]: Project Summary:
Work has already commenced on the 185-metre Observation Wheel, one of Dubai land’s iconic tourist attractions, which will welcome its first visitors in early 2009 and provide a sweeping panoramic view of Dubai and its environs.

At the project launch on May 12 2005 Salem bin Dasmal, Dubailand CEO stated:
“We welcome the Great Wheel Corporation to Dubailand where we are building one of the world’s finest locations to live in, to have fun and to enjoy and celebrate the good things of life,"
We are creating unique wonders in partnership with the private sector from across the world. The Great Dubai Wheel is an example of this model cooperation and yet another addition of a world-class attraction to the ever increasing skyline of Dubai.
“I am confident that the Great Dubai Wheel will add a unique architectural landmark to the Dubai skyline, and enhance the Dubailand experience several times over.
“The Great Wheel Corporation has a proven track record in developing these remarkable attractions around the world, and I am glad Dubailand is the destination for their masterpiece in Dubai.”
The Great Dubai Wheel will be larger than the London Eye, which was recently voted the best tourist attraction in the world.
Located in a prime area of Dubailand, the Great Dubai Wheel would further enhance Dubai’s reputation as a leading world city, featuring unique iconic architectural structures.
In the course of the journey on the wheel, visitors will be able to view distances of up to 50km, and see most of the leading physical structures of Dubai.
The scheme's master plan was presented to Dubailand and Dubai Municipality by Great Wheel Corporation, the leading international company specialising in developing, financing, building and operating Great Wheels. Currently, the group is working on several sites around the world.

Leon Heijkoop, representative of the Great Wheel Corporation in Dubai stated: “Gaining the approval of Dubailand and Dubai Municipality is crucial to the development of the Great Dubai Wheel, and we are grateful to both for their unstinted support through every phase of the project to date.”

Heijkoop added that the master plan was prepared by a team of international experts with the support of Dubailand's project consultants.

Florian Bollen, Chairman of the Great Wheel Corporation, said:
“Evidence from destinations that already have the Great Wheel suggests that they are a very popular way of seeing the cityscape from a different perspective. The Great Dubai Wheel will be one of the most attractive locations in Dubai to visit - a place for families and friends, as well as for tourists to enjoy stunning views during a 30 minute fantastic experience.”
At 185 metres [610 ft], the Great Dubai Wheel is designed to exceed the height of the current largest Ferris wheel, the Singapore Flyer, but smaller than the planned Beijing Great Wheel.
It is one 1 foot [0.30 m] higher than the proposed Great Berlin Wheel.
The estimated costs of building the wheel are AED 250 million [US$68 million].
The 610 feet Great Dubai Wheel is expected to attract 2 million visitors each year to Dubailand and further boost the region's image as a tourist destination.
[D]: Dubai Map: Great Dubai Wheel:

The Great Dubai Wheel is shown on this map just off Emirates Road above Arabian Ranches – mid left of image:
Being on Emirates Road means that it will have direct Dubai Metro blue line access – and although the blue line stations have not yet been announced a metro train station is most likely to be located directly outside the Great Dubai Wheel given its size and importance and the fact that the metro line will be running along Emirates Road.
Geographically the Great Dubai Wheel is located at the start of Dubailand directly linked to Dubai’s main highway Sheik Zayed Road – in the top end of Dubailand closest to the centre of the city of Dubai – so will be one of the most convenient of the Dubailand projects to travel to from Dubai city centre.

Regrettably this design was not preferred – it’s a much more exiting architectural structure and more Dubai like than the somewhat ordinary final design selected:

Dubai Waterfront: The World

The 10th of January the first part of Dubai’s most interesting and impressive building was finished. Nakheel, the company behind projects as The Palms and The World, says in a press statement, that the last brick has been set to the 27 kilo metres long protective wall for the 300 small islands, representing The World.
Next step is to sell the new ground areas to building masters and other interested, to start the building of infrastructure and buildings.
Buyers of the separate islands get the land area as a part of the connecting water. It opens up for the possibilities to form the land area and freely match it after your own needs. That’s why islands today, can look a curtain way, only to be changed in the future. In the land area, it’s not allowed to shift the landmasses

Coral Island Resort

For the extremely wealthy and for those who not really find the ”mainstream” The World enough far away from reality, Nakheel offers the Coral Island Resort.
Placed close to North America, the group of islands are said to offer luxury and privacy, places to live near private beaches but at the same time close enough to rest of The World, not to be completely isolated.

In Delhi there are many temples such as Birla Mandir, Jain Mandir, Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi Mandir, Hanuman Mandir and Kamal Mandir. This is a Bahai temple and you can see the teachings of Bahaullah in the walls. In India, the design of the Bahai temple made by architect, Feribuz Sahba is inspired by the lotus, a symbol of purity that is inseparable associated with the Indian culture.

The construction of the temple was started in 1980 and completed in 1986. The petals are made of white concrete and clad in white Greek marble panels. An ancillary building house offices, conference halls, library and audio-visual hall etc. Inside the Mandi, pin-drop silence is maintained. You can sit and meditate in the prayer hall in silence. DSF 2014 TO SPARKLE WITH OVER 150 ATTRACTIONS

The Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), has unveiled the calendar of events for the 19th edition of Dubai Shopping Festival, which will be held from Jan.2-Feb.2, 2014, setting the stage to highlighting Dubai as an international family tourism destination that offers unique shopping experiences.

The DSF 2014 calendar of events is a line-up of over 150 events and activities that will be spread far and wide across the city at key DSF destinations.

With the aim of ensuring that the whole of Dubai feels the Festival spirit, the organisers identified several key locations across Dubai and turned them into main DSF destinations.

Areas such as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Al Seef Street, Al Rigga Street, and The Walk - Jumeirah Beach Residence will host events and activities aimed at ensuring that residents and visitors in all nooks and corner of the city are able to participate and experience the festivities.

This year's DSF calendar of events features attractions in diverse fields from shopping to entertainment, fashion to lifestyle, and arts and culture including international shows, concerts, shopping promotions, and mega raffles offering prizes worth millions of dirhams, that is a true manifestation of the festival theme "Shop at your Best” that is bound to make DSF 2014 the most memorable edition yet since the shopping and entertainment extravaganza was launched in 1996.

Unveiling the calendar of events, Laila Mohammed Suhail, CEO, Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, said, "With all eyes on Dubai post Expo 2020 win, we are fully aware that we have to rise up to the expectations as DSF 2014 is the first festival after the announcement. We have made extra efforts to make sure that DSF truly lives up to its reputation as a festival for all by identifying a number of additional and special areas of Dubai to host the numerous activities to enable maximum exposure and opportunities for visitors to experience the vibrancy of this extravaganza and also reap its benefits.”

"Guided by the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and based on the excellent cooperation between the government and private sector, the DSF brand has evolved from strength to strength and has contributed significantly towards Dubai's economy.

" In fact DSF accounts for 30 per cent of annual retail sales in the emirate and has also helped reinforced the city's reputation as a global tourism landmark. Indeed, DSF compliments Dubai's position as the tourism destination of choice in the region by narrowing the gap between the tourism and retail sectors under a common platform where businesses in both sectors work together to give visitors an enriching and memorable holiday experience.”

Suhail lauded the excellent role played by the private sector, and expressed her deep appreciation for the high level of support extended by the strategic partners of DFRE and the Key Sponsors of DSF 2014 to ensure that the festival yet again becomes a resounding success.

Studies have revealed that Dubai is well on course to achieving its Tourism Vision for 2020 of attracting 20 million tourists and 300 billion dirhams in tourism revenues annually, of which a major share would come from retail sales.

Retail purchases by visitors is set to reach almost 33 billion dirhams by 2017, accounting for more than a quarter of total sales, which is expected to increase at 5.7 per cent annually over the period 2013-2017.

The opening day will feature roaming, stage and street performers, spectacular fireworks, a DSF trademark, and various other events and activities, making it an unforgettable day for families and children.

Celebrations and carnivals go hand in hand, and DSF 2014 will be remembered for its visual feasts thanks to a colourful line-up of roaming, stage and street artistes getting together to perform at the DSF Carnival, which will be the biggest carnival in the history of DSF. – The Gulf Today

Fireworks show on the Strip last year
a week away and some revelers still have decisions to make regarding their party spot selections. Simple entry costs for some of these events are pricey (particularly on the Strip), but it is New Years Eve in Las Vegas which usually demands a fat wallet. Routinely, ladies cover charges are always cheaper than that for men at most of the clubs.
Here's a partial listing of the popular celebrity performance/ party/nightlife/hoorah options in Vegas for NYE night, including some less expensive event options. Most of the party entry prices per person listed below include some alcohol (eg 1 drink plus a champagne toast at midnight), but partiers are encouraged to check out specifics. Party/ event start times are listed. Check the provided links for each event for more info.
