The Great Wheel Corporation is a company specializing in the development, building, financing and management of observation platforms and tourist observation wheels – also known as Ferris wheels.
Giant Wheels built by the company include the largest wheel in the world, the Singapore Flyer, and the company is currently building two larger wheels, the Beijing Great Wheel and the Great Berlin Wheel.
In 2006 the Dubai Municipality gave planning permission to the Great Dubai Wheel, which is expected to become one of the major attractions at Dubailand.
The 185m wheel will be taller than the London Eye and will cost over AED 250 million to construct.
Visitors to Dubailand will be able to view distances up to 50 km from the air conditioned comfort of one of 30 capsules.
The Great Dubai Wheel will be both built and managed by the Great Wheel Corporation with building expected to begin shortly, and open for business in 2009.
The engineering challenge to create the wheel has been undertaken by Hollandia, the specialist Dutch engineering company which also built the London Eye.
The master plan was prepared by a team of Great Wheel Corporation structural engineers with the support of the Dubailands team of project consultants.
Founded by Florien Bollen the current chairman, the developer company has branches in Singapore, London, Beijing, Orlando, and now Dubai – with its head office in Singapore.
[C]: Project Summary:
Work has already commenced on the 185-metre Observation Wheel, one of Dubai land’s iconic tourist attractions, which will welcome its first visitors in early 2009 and provide a sweeping panoramic view of Dubai and its environs.

At the project launch on May 12 2005 Salem bin Dasmal, Dubailand CEO stated:
“We welcome the Great Wheel Corporation to Dubailand where we are building one of the world’s finest locations to live in, to have fun and to enjoy and celebrate the good things of life,"
We are creating unique wonders in partnership with the private sector from across the world. The Great Dubai Wheel is an example of this model cooperation and yet another addition of a world-class attraction to the ever increasing skyline of Dubai.
“I am confident that the Great Dubai Wheel will add a unique architectural landmark to the Dubai skyline, and enhance the Dubailand experience several times over.
“The Great Wheel Corporation has a proven track record in developing these remarkable attractions around the world, and I am glad Dubailand is the destination for their masterpiece in Dubai.”
The Great Dubai Wheel will be larger than the London Eye, which was recently voted the best tourist attraction in the world.
Located in a prime area of Dubailand, the Great Dubai Wheel would further enhance Dubai’s reputation as a leading world city, featuring unique iconic architectural structures.
In the course of the journey on the wheel, visitors will be able to view distances of up to 50km, and see most of the leading physical structures of Dubai.
The scheme's master plan was presented to Dubailand and Dubai Municipality by Great Wheel Corporation, the leading international company specialising in developing, financing, building and operating Great Wheels. Currently, the group is working on several sites around the world.

Leon Heijkoop, representative of the Great Wheel Corporation in Dubai stated: “Gaining the approval of Dubailand and Dubai Municipality is crucial to the development of the Great Dubai Wheel, and we are grateful to both for their unstinted support through every phase of the project to date.”

Heijkoop added that the master plan was prepared by a team of international experts with the support of Dubailand's project consultants.

Florian Bollen, Chairman of the Great Wheel Corporation, said:
“Evidence from destinations that already have the Great Wheel suggests that they are a very popular way of seeing the cityscape from a different perspective. The Great Dubai Wheel will be one of the most attractive locations in Dubai to visit - a place for families and friends, as well as for tourists to enjoy stunning views during a 30 minute fantastic experience.”
At 185 metres [610 ft], the Great Dubai Wheel is designed to exceed the height of the current largest Ferris wheel, the Singapore Flyer, but smaller than the planned Beijing Great Wheel.
It is one 1 foot [0.30 m] higher than the proposed Great Berlin Wheel.
The estimated costs of building the wheel are AED 250 million [US$68 million].
The 610 feet Great Dubai Wheel is expected to attract 2 million visitors each year to Dubailand and further boost the region's image as a tourist destination.

The Great Dubai Wheel is shown on this map just off Emirates Road above Arabian Ranches – mid left of image:
Being on Emirates Road means that it will have direct Dubai Metro blue line access – and although the blue line stations have not yet been announced a metro train station is most likely to be located directly outside the Great Dubai Wheel given its size and importance and the fact that the metro line will be running along Emirates Road.
Geographically the Great Dubai Wheel is located at the start of Dubailand directly linked to Dubai’s main highway Sheik Zayed Road – in the top end of Dubailand closest to the centre of the city of Dubai – so will be one of the most convenient of the Dubailand projects to travel to from Dubai city centre.

Regrettably this design was not preferred – it’s a much more exiting architectural structure and more Dubai like than the somewhat ordinary final design selected:

Dubai Waterfront: The World

The 10th of January the first part of Dubai’s most interesting and impressive building was finished. Nakheel, the company behind projects as The Palms and The World, says in a press statement, that the last brick has been set to the 27 kilo metres long protective wall for the 300 small islands, representing The World.
Next step is to sell the new ground areas to building masters and other interested, to start the building of infrastructure and buildings.
Buyers of the separate islands get the land area as a part of the connecting water. It opens up for the possibilities to form the land area and freely match it after your own needs. That’s why islands today, can look a curtain way, only to be changed in the future. In the land area, it’s not allowed to shift the landmasses

Coral Island Resort

For the extremely wealthy and for those who not really find the ”mainstream” The World enough far away from reality, Nakheel offers the Coral Island Resort.
Placed close to North America, the group of islands are said to offer luxury and privacy, places to live near private beaches but at the same time close enough to rest of The World, not to be completely isolated.

In Delhi there are many temples such as Birla Mandir, Jain Mandir, Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi Mandir, Hanuman Mandir and Kamal Mandir. Kamal Mandir is a beautiful temple and it is designed in the shape of lotus which is beautiful Mandir and a symbol of integrity. Here people of any religion can worship. This is a Bahai temple and you can see the teachings of Bahaullah in the walls. In India, the design of the Bahai temple made by architect, Feribuz Sahba is inspired by the lotus, a symbol of purity that is inseparable associated with the Indian culture.

The construction of the temple was started in 1980 and completed in 1986. The petals are made of white concrete and clad in white Greek marble panels. An ancillary building house offices, conference halls, library and audio-visual hall etc. Inside the Mandi, pin-drop silence is maintained. You can sit and meditate in the prayer hall in silence. This is a superb experience you cannot forget it.

DSF 2014 TO SPARKLE WITH OVER 150 ATTRACTIONS

The Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), has unveiled the calendar of events for the 19th edition of Dubai Shopping Festival, which will be held from Jan.2-Feb.2, 2014, setting the stage to highlighting Dubai as an international family tourism destination that offers unique shopping experiences.

The DSF 2014 calendar of events is a line-up of over 150 events and activities that will be spread far and wide across the city at key DSF destinations.

With the aim of ensuring that the whole of Dubai feels the Festival spirit, the organisers identified several key locations across Dubai and turned them into main DSF destinations.

Areas such as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Al Seef Street, Al Rigga Street, and The Walk - Jumeirah Beach Residence will host events and activities aimed at ensuring that residents and visitors in all nooks and corner of the city are able to participate and experience the festivities.

This year's DSF calendar of events features attractions in diverse fields from shopping to entertainment, fashion to lifestyle, and arts and culture including international shows, concerts, shopping promotions, and mega raffles offering prizes worth millions of dirhams, that is a true manifestation of the festival theme "Shop at your Best” that is bound to make DSF 2014 the most memorable edition yet since the shopping and entertainment extravaganza was launched in 1996.

Unveiling the calendar of events, Laila Mohammed Suhail, CEO, Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, said, "With all eyes on Dubai post Expo 2020 win, we are fully aware that we have to rise up to the expectations as DSF 2014 is the first festival after the announcement. We have made extra efforts to make sure that DSF truly lives up to its reputation as a festival for all by identifying a number of additional and special areas of Dubai to host the numerous activities to enable maximum exposure and opportunities for visitors to experience the vibrancy of this extravaganza and also reap its benefits.”

"Guided by the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and based on the excellent cooperation between the government and private sector, the DSF brand has evolved from strength to strength and has contributed significantly towards Dubai's economy.

" In fact DSF accounts for 30 per cent of annual retail sales in the emirate and has also helped reinforced the city's reputation as a global tourism landmark. Indeed, DSF compliments Dubai's position as the tourism destination of choice in the region by narrowing the gap between the tourism and retail sectors under a common platform where businesses in both sectors work together to give visitors an enriching and memorable holiday experience.”

Suhail lauded the excellent role played by the private sector, and expressed her deep appreciation for the high level of support extended by the strategic partners of DFRE and the Key Sponsors of DSF 2014 to ensure that the festival yet again becomes a resounding success.

Studies have revealed that Dubai is well on course to achieving its Tourism Vision for 2020 of attracting 20 million tourists and 300 billion dirhams in tourism revenues annually, of which a major share would come from retail sales.

Retail purchases by visitors is set to reach almost 33 billion dirhams by 2017, accounting for more than a quarter of total sales, which is expected to increase at 5.7 per cent annually over the period 2013-2017.

The opening day will feature roaming, stage and street performers, spectacular fireworks, a DSF trademark, and various other events and activities, making it an unforgettable day for families and children.

Celebrations and carnivals go hand in hand, and DSF 2014 will be remembered for its visual feasts thanks to a colourful line-up of roaming, stage and street artistes getting together to perform at the DSF Carnival, which will be the biggest carnival in the history of DSF. – The Gulf Today
